wolf berry root

a brief overview

At StrangeMakes.Com , we pride ourselves in making therapeutics from scratch beginning with the whole plant.  During this blog post series, I would like to share with you some interesting facts about Wolf Berry Root, aka the root of the Gojo berry, which traditional Chinese medicine refers to as Di Gu Pi.

The Di Gu Pi has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years and first recorded in history around 200 BC.  Not only has it been used to help clear the lungs but to treat conditions such as fever, night sweats, coughs and asthma.  The topical applications for Di Gu Pi include improving the barrier function of the skin, boosting collagen, reducing inflammation and wound healing.

Since Wolf Berry Root has a dual function as a food ingredient and also a therapuetic, great attention needs to be made when sourcing it.  As a food ingredient, Di Gu Pi can grow in many regions throughout Asia and is easily accessible.   However, as a medicinal herb, Di Gu Pi is most potent within the Shananxi province of China and is selectively harvested two times a year.
