Myrrh

a brief overview

At StrangeMakes.Com, we pride ourselves in making therapeutics from scratch beginning with the whole plant.  During this blog post, I would like to introduce you to Myrrh also known as Mo Yao in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Many speak about and understand Myrrh from the Biblical text, but fail to recognize the important role it can play within the current field of medicine and healing, head to toe.

According to the latest research, Myrrh is showing it has an ability to protect neuronal cells from death, thus slowing down diseases such as Alzheimers.

On the skin, Mo Yao is a super fighter of microbes, alleviates fungal infections, blocks histamine and soothes allergy related skin conditions.

On a cardiovascular level, Myrrh has been shown to reverse oxidative changes, increase production of myocardial antioxidants and reduce inflammation within the heart muscle.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses Mo Yao to treat inflammatory diseases such as mild to severe ulcerative colitis.

Mo Yao challenges malignant tumor growth and can also induce cancer cell death.

Within the joints, Mo Yao suppresses pro-inflammatory proteins commonly found in Rheumatoid Arthritis and reduces the thickness of joint swelling.

On a metabolic level, Myrrh is an excellent stabilizer of blood sugars.

As a mouth wash, Myrrh helps to reduce plaque buildup and inflammation more effectively than commonly prescribed mouthwashes.

Perhaps most intriguing is that Myrrh delivers promising results for those with multi drug-resistant bacterial infections as is common with MRSA and pneumonia.

Mo Yao is native to regions around Arabia, Somalia and Ethiopa. However, environmental changes, express demand and exploitation of the harvesting process have placed Myrrh in a vulnerable position.  These current trends, if not remediated, forecast a grim future and endanger the plants that have produced this amazing compound for thousands of years.

As we continue to navigate our way through the world of herbs, we rely on people like Dr. Janette DeCarlo to guide us in purchasing herbs responsibly. Dr. DeCarlo not only educates the villages who’s livelihoods depend on the harvesting of these resins, she also advocates for the fair trade of such. We believe that the most in-depth knowledge surrounding all aspects of resin supply, production and integrity lay within the expertise of Dr. DeCarlo. With that, we will continue to follow her guidance to ensure we purchase responsibly.
